After working with Vignette for two years, we decided to switch from their CMS software to Magnolia. We were initially attracted by Magnolia's rich out-of-the-box functionality and the ease with which it could be customized, but were also pleasantly surprised by its performance, which allowed us to use fewer server boxes and still have a more responsive system. Its focus on simplicity and ease of use has quickly won over our users as well.

Texas State University

Business problem addressed
Texas State University needed a replacement for its outdated Vignette system. They needed a system that was easy to scale out to about 250 web-sites for all of the university's departments and organizations, with different administrators and users for each of the sites. With about 300 content authors, the system had to be integrated with their LDAP directory server. To unify their message, content reuse across their sites also was an important requirement, as was scalability and load balancing.

Technologies and products implemented
The project was done inhouse by Texas State University. The team has build a number of nifty add-ons, for example a custom Apache cache and templates that output micro-formats for events.

Current status of the project
TSU has licensed several Magnolia Enterprise Edition servers and has a service level agreement with Magnolia in place. About 150 web-sites have been moved to the new infrastructure, with more being migrated daily, even while new functionality is constantly being added. The total number of websites to be migrated to Magnolia is planned to be 350.

The customer is extremely happy since Magnolia has allowed them to have a unified internet presence that scales well, is easy to maintain and resulted in extremely happy users.
